It's magic... shoes worn on shore will release all their dirt the minute you step on board. Shore shoes will also carry small rocks that are great at scratching wooden floors. Make a real effort to clean your shoes or change them when you come aboard.
Natural gum rubber shoe soles, or Holey Soles, are the very best for being on board any boat. If you intend to winter sail, Canadian Tire sells Kamik rubber boots. The best ones to purchase are green, with a white rubber sole. They come with a felt insert, and are guaranteed to keep your feet warm up to -40 degrees fahrenheit.
If you take your shoes off on board be sure to stow them (tripping over other people's shoes is a common boat mishap).
