Person overboard

When underway, there should always be at least two people on deck or near the helm.

If you fall overboard, yell as loud as you can as fast as you can - seconds count.  Fifty feet behind the boat your voice cannot be heard.

If a person falls in the water, yell for the captain, throw floatable markers overboard and keep your eye on the person in the water until they are rescued.

An important addition to the boat's rescue equipment is a floating sling with rope and tackle which attaches to the stern cleat of the boat. Ensure the sling has a very long line so that when you deploy it, you will have a lot of manoeuvering room to reach the MOB (man overboard).  The sling can then be used to haul a hypothermic person out of the water much easier than with physical strength only.
