Cell phones are good for emergencies as a backup for VHF radios.  Close to cities and small towns dial 911 and they can help or patch you to the coast guard.  You should also keep the Coast Guard land line number close.  At this time cell phones have dead spots and limited range so use only as a backup for VHF.  In the future cell phones could be our first choice as satellite coverage expands.
