Basic boating terms to understand


Ropes   are called lines
Davits
  are what dinghies hang on
Blocks
  are pulleys
Bow
  is forward, the pointy end
Aft
  is stern, or back end
     
Draft
  is how deep your boat is underwater
Helm
  is where you steer the boat from
Deck Shoes
  are yuppie loafers
Port
  is the left when looking forward (red light)
Starboard   is the right when looking forward (green light)
     
Fenders
  are round soft tubes that hang between the boat and the dock
Cleats
  are what you tie to on both the dock and boat
Galley
  the kitchen
Below
  Below the deck
Bilge
  the deepest part of the boat
     
Staterooms   are bedrooms
Head
  is the bathroom
Main Salon
  living area
Bright Work
  is varnished woodwork
Charts
  are nautical maps
     
Fathom   is a depth measurement for water (1 fathom = 6 ft)
Knot
  knots per hour: speed measurement (1 knot - 1.111 mph)
Mayday
  English speaking international distress call
Transom
  the aft end of the boat that is vertical
VHF Radio
  ship to ship radio
     
Anchor Rode
  Chain or line attached to the boat and anchor
Sheets
  the lines holding the ends of the sail or booms
Boom   Holds the bottom of the sail
Halyard
  Lines to the top of the mast to pull up sails
12, 24, 32
  DC battery voltages commonly found on boats
     
Stays
  are wires that hold up the mast
Wake
  is the wave the boat makes as it moves
