Athens is a very dirty city..don't wear white shoes! Captain GiO's biggest surprise was that the Acropolis was under restoration. The restoration was undertaken to fix erosion from air pollution. It's amazing that something can stand for thousands of years, and have more erosion from the last fifty years from our carbon dioxide emissions. This European trip was to see artifacts from antiquity before modern society destroyed them, but we learned firsthand how modern society is wreaking havoc. We stayed in a small suburb called Glifada with our friend's family. It was nice to have the contrast from downtown Athens to the quiet sleepy suburb that was licked by the sea.
